Is going sober going to make you miss out on opportunities? Does abstaining from alcohol turn you into a social pariah?

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a short blog post on Medium titled “Is Sobriety Too Extreme?”

My answer is that sobriety has improved my life immeasurably. My life as a drunk was miserable, but after over five years sober, I can honestly say I am happy.

I can’t say whether sobriety is the right choice for anyone else, but I can say without the slightest hesitation that it is the right choice for me. The idea that cutting alcohol out of my life was “too extreme” is laughable.

The post blew up and generated far more responses than I typically get. Most of them were from fellow alcoholics who had reached the same conclusions about their drinking habits as I had. However, there were also a couple of detractors.
