Overall, quitting alcohol was an incredibly difficult experience. It was one of the hardest things that I’ve ever done in my life.

However, despite that, there was one aspect of sobriety that I actually found far easier than I expected: My interactions with non-sober people.

I thought that getting sober would cause endless friction between me and the drinkers in my life. I expected to feel shame and embarrassment whenever someone found out about my sobriety. I worried that I’d get into confrontational arguments and be forced to defend my decision to quit.
