“If I quit drinking, it’s going to ruin my social life.” — Me, and countless other alcoholics.

One of the biggest fears people have about getting sober is that it’s going to ruin their social lives. (Or, put another way, it’s one of the biggest excuses that people use to avoid getting sober.)

I worried about this a lot when I quit drinking, which was ironic because my social life was already pretty bad back when I was drinking every night. Even so, I couldn’t help but think that if I got sober, I’d never have anything fun to do and I’d never be able to make another friend.

So, what has my sober social life really been like? The honest answer is that it’s been a mixed bag.
